This Is Boxing: A Revolutionary Boxing Event for Millennials

THIS IS BOXING UK, OPENING NIGHT Sunday 17th December, York Hall

This Is Boxing is a new revolutionary sporting event created by urban millennials for urban millennials. Over the years UK boxing has seen a growth in interest from a wider audience and has become an increasingly popular sporting entertainment with the likes of Anthony Joshua, David Haye, Tony Bellew and Conor McGregor spearheading the movement.

This Is Boxing aims to redefine traditional boxing events to one that attracts a younger, cooler crowd. The event aims to do this by combining white-collar boxing fights with upcoming urban musicians, the best DJs and comedic commentary to keep guests entertained all night long! White-Collar boxing is a form of amateur boxing which sees individuals from a variety of professional backgrounds coming together to fight in the ring. It provides a good opportunity to see fresh talented home-grown UK boxers rise in the ranks and quickly learn on the spot. However for too long the entire boxing industry including the amateur sector has been economically dominated by white men who act as managers, agents, promoters with very little ethnic minority representation at the ownership & leadership level.

London born Ant Opara co-founded This is Boxing with Whylee the duo has  combined their passions for boxing to create a platform for the urban demographic to enjoy boxing and live music all under the same roof, simultaneously giving ethnic minority boxers a better chance at securing fights. "I have been to many combat sport events and the set-up is always the same. You only have to look around the crowd to realise that the urban communities tend to not attend boxing events in any great capacity so I feel that it is our duty to give the people an event that they want to engage with culturally hence why we are incorporating the Urban Music Scene, urban fashion, cuisine and comedy to bring a very unique event to the UK and beyond. This is for our culture...This is Boxing!" - Whylee.

The night will be packed with up to 8 fights of equally weighted opponents. Performers will be judged by professionals and commentated on by the best UK comedians.

DJ Mr Play: Award winning International DJ Mr Play has been in the entertainment industry for over 15 years! Starting his early days as a club promoter he founded Play Entertainment in 2002 from its humble beginnings as a club – night Promotion Company it has expanded into a multi – faceted entertainment company, with a logo and brand that is recognized across the globe. Drawing upon life experiences and greatly influenced by his father Mr Play knew from the onset where he wanted his company to go, and what he wanted to achieve – nothing stood in his way.

Don Strapzy: Growing up, Andrew McHugh fell in with the wrong crowd, watched friends go to jail and became increasingly frustrated with having to catch buses.

The 21-year-old turned to writing soul baring music to help him deal with gritty life as a cash-strapped teenager in Lewisham.

Rapping in school and entering MC contests around south London under the name Don Strapzy led Andrew to post a video of himself freestyling on broadcasting website SBTV in 2010 – and the rest is history.

Shef: 'Go Off' is a hit introduction by a new artist on the British rap scene. With a polished and dynamic beat which acts as a backdrop to first-rate lyrics and an infectious hook. Shef has cross-over appeal whilst remaining true to the new wave rap sound.

Ant Opara Founder: Born and Raised in Wood Green, North London during its rougher days boxing was always a way out for Ant Opara who would train with his coach Carl Guichard week in week out, keeping him focused, disciplined and away from trouble. When his coach moved to Trinidad, Ant didn’t follow his pursuit of an amateur license and left the world of Boxing altogether moving to Bristol, West England. A much older Ant still resides in  Bristol where he met Whylee and their combined passions for boxing led them to create a platform for the urban demographic to enjoy Boxing and live music all under the same roof, simultaneously giving ethnic minority boxers a better chance at securing fights.

Whylee: Born in West London (Paddington) and moved to Bristol at the ripe old age of 11, Whylee gravitated towards combat sports from a young age beginning. Tae Kwon Do at the age of 6 and earning his black belt by the age of 12. His passion for boxing has always been strong with Mike Tyson Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank Snr being some of his early idols. During his late teens he began kickboxing and muay thai before moving onto MMA and Combat Jujitsu where he has gained his yellow belt (3rd belt). His background has always been in engagement having been a personal banking manager for Lloyds TSB before moving onto digital marketing as a consultant for SMEs. His main strength is his ability to adapt and effortlessly builds rapport with a wide range of people. He is very passionate when it comes to This is Boxing UK as he sees this type of even that is something that is needed in the urban community.

Jared: Having spent his early years addicted to participating in any sport possible Jared became a gym junkie. At 22 he was approached to take part in a well-known white collar boxing show at the Troxy. Fast forward Jared had a relatively low key go at amateur boxing scene and grew to love the sport more and more. “Boxing sharpens the mind as well as the body!” Residing in London and long term friends with Ant, Jared has become boxing director and in charge of bringing the boxers together on the night for what promises to be an event like no other!
